A Better Update
My last update was broad and vague because like, it feels weird to come back to a space after so long and get very specific, I guess. Like you're talking to people you haven't talked to in a long time and you don't want to start with the fight you got into with your sister yesterday.
I didn't fight with my sister yesterday, but you know, as an example.
But since I'm friending people now (hello, people!) I should probably introduce myself a little bit, which also functions as an update for those of you who've been around and known me a while!
⭐️ I used to work as a bookseller in a children's bookstore. As of August this year, I AM FREE. I have a lot of grievances with the way it was run, but I loved most of our customers and I love, love, love children's literature. Some picture books are serious art, man. Look up Du Iz Tak for one of my favorites.
⭐️ What I currently do, and what I've been doing simultaneously alongside my bookstore work for the last 6 years, is work at a children's literary agency. I'm an assistant to a senior agent (my first boss from 6 years ago) the executive agent (as of 2 years ago) and the president of the company (as of this year), and I do a lot of random granola. I read contracts, I do TONS of data entry, and I help boss 1 with editorial stuff for client manuscripts. As of this year, I'm also the point person/on the ground organizer of their yearly writing retreat, which just happened last weekend. Like, ended yesterday. It was a phenomenal experience despite the fact that I'm still exhausted.
⭐️ Needless to say, I read a lot of kids' books. Although I've kind of been depressed for the last year or so and I've read...a lot less. I think how much I'm reading might just tie into my mental state, because three months after quitting my bookstore job I'm suddenly All About The Books again. Hmmm. Anyway, point being, I love literature. It's hard to describe my tastes because they're all over the map, but if it's got characters I can enjoy, I'm probably there for it.
⭐️ I used to live in Japan. I was there for five years, and moved back seven years ago, and I miss it a lot (but would never want to work there again. Probably.) I speak Japanese but I still like to watch things with subtitles anyway, because it helps me learn. But I watch a lot of variety shows and quiz shows without subs too.
I'll try to go into more depth about some things sometime soon. I'm fading, ugh! I barely did anything today but eat chocolate chip cookies, I shouldn't be this tired. And yet!
Anyway, hello and welcome and hi again to those of you that are still around!

Also, yes, absolutely this feeling. I used to abhor small talk but the older I get, the more I learn that it's ... actually quite useful? for giving folks the space to decide how deep they're comfortable going in a conversation.
/says the person who barged in immediately with a request for recommendations lolz

And don't fret at all about asking for recs, oh my god, that was one of my favorite parts of the job. There are so many wonderful books out there and it's a little bit of magic when you find the right one for the right person.
Small talk is definitely useful, and there's awful small talk where you can count each awkward second between exchanges, and then there's comfortable small talk where you feel like you're warming up to each other. Yes!

CAN YOU BELIEVE that I re-downloaded Photoshop and am now baby-stepping my way through it again? I had to read my one tutorial again and then came across our icon battles from pretty much 10 years ago (rounded up). <3

Oh gosh, I'd love to start that up again. Wouldn't that be wild?! But I would be in the exact same place as you, having to relearn all my old tricks over again. WILD.
Where have you been keeping yourself, girl? Are you still into Arashi and all that, or have you branched into other places? Are you back-ish here on DW, or was this just a random drive by? I wanna talk books and stuff with you again!

I am very much still into Arashi, amazingly! It helps that I really enjoy getting people into Arashi, so it's hard to leave. Not that I want to. So in the past few years, it's been a trip dipping back into the fandom pool, I love it. The staying power is so great it scares me. AND THEN, I watched Hana Nochi Hare and UGH, now King & Prince is creeping in like what is this I don't need this but aww they're so adorable and sweet jesus now Cinderella Girl is playing for the 50th time.
Man, it's hard to keep to blogging regularly now with work compared to years past, but I would love to at least update a little more than before! I'll definitely be reading my friends list! So glad you're back and I look forward to all your book posts for sure!

I don't know whose idea it was to make icons 100x100 (Livejournal's, it was Livejournal's idea) but it's kind of like writing a drabble, isn't it. Don't ask me what I mean by that. But also, I think you have more of a problem with resolution than I do. ;)
I'm so glad!! I came back to Arashi after a stint away about...oh, a year ago? And it's been hard because I couldn't find anybody, and now you and
Is KinPuri worth paying attention to? They seem kind of adorable. But I confess there's always something about the kouhai groups where I'm like, you guys don't know what it's like to claw your way up, and Arashi's underdog-to-top-idol story is one of the things that makes me love them dearly. I mean, PLUS everything else. But maybe I'll watch Hana Nochi Hare (I mean, I have to be a good fan, right? Although lol I totally saw the Jun cameo, that was hilarious).
I would love it if you did! I've been curious how The Betty Life is going.

That's awesome! Yeah it's definitely sloooowed down here and LJ. But I'm guessing it may just be the platform? It seems nobody wants to do journal entries anymore, lol.
UHH YES, please please watch Hana Nochi Hare. At first, I was on the fence because HYD sequel?? Is that needed? But the main characters are refreshingly different to Domyouji & Makino, and yet the drama still kept the same kind of charm. Also, if you ever get to watch any interviews with Hirano Sho, he is EXACTLY the character he plays and is a hoot. God, what a precious man. (You bet I laughed every time I saw holo!Jun oh my god)
I don't claim to be a Kinpuri expert or anything, but from what I gathered since my one-month (lol) venture into the fandom, it seems like they were one of those groups that debuted "right on time." Most of Kinpuri joined as juniors around the same time as Sexy Zone members became juniors? So it wasn't super fast, but also not as long as most of their senpai's waits. So I totally get it. I'm just hoping the best for them that they don't get too big-headed too soon.
Girl, I will try to make time!

There's been a bit of a boost to DW now that Tumblr is going down in flames. I mean, I think Tumblr will live on in a new form, but fandom has to find someplace more porn friendly. Getting harder and harder to do these days, yeah? I definitely want to do journal entries, though! So here I am!
Yeah like, a HanaDan sequel is really unnecessary, but I also know the original creator wrote the manga. So? I guess? It's like legit??? And I'm happy to hear it's not just a new-characters-same-personalities thing going on, because there only needs to be one Domyouji in this world, oh god.
I know that Jun is super into Cinderella Girl now, lol. He's been singing it at karaoke a lot. Jun, we know you love your cute, cuddly juniors.

You so smart, doing an intro post. May try it.

I also put a comment onto this friending meme and went around pouncing on a ton of people, so I felt like an intro post would be helpful. :)
rabu rabu for you <3

It was great to learn a bit more about you. I think it's cool you lived in Japan!

It was a great (and exhausting) experience--I lived there from 2006 through 2011, and there are lots of historical entries in my journal if you feel like poking around, but it's been a very long time. But I certainly wouldn't be where I am today if I didn't live there!

How old is your daughter? Those are a whole lot of classics--there are some great fun things in the younger age range and I'd be happy to recommend, if you like!
